The EHS industry is unique in that it is less involved in the technology discussion than many other industries. But it’s important that EHS managers know the types of software available to them to make informed decisions and improve their operations.

Recently, Verdantix surveyed over 300 EHS professionals to find out more about their technology preferences, to gain insight into this elusive topic.

Here are three of the main takeaways that we learned from this survey.

Make Yourself at Home with A Dedicated Cloud Environment

[fa icon="calendar'] Fri, Dec 02, 2016 / by Alexa Sussman

In today’s software world, enterprise cloud deployments are no longer an up-and-coming trend—they’re practically a standard offering. Cloud offerings provide the same flexibility and scalability of an in-house solution while reducing installation and maintenance costs, so they are a good option for many businesses.

Some clouds are hosted in multi-tenant environments, where many customers are sharing a single, centralized system. Then there are dedicated cloud environments, where each customer receives their own hosted realms and separate bandwidth that they draw from to make the software work.

The type of cloud environment makes a big difference to customers. Think of multi-tenancy as squeezing as many people as possible to live in one single house while dedicated cloud environments give everyone their own homes—there is bound to be chaos in the crowded house.

Confessions of a Multi-Tenant Solution Provider: Not all Clouds are Created Equal

[fa icon="calendar'] Fri, Nov 18, 2016 / by Tim Lozier

If you’re like many people out there in the market, you’ve been confronted with the “cloud.” It has moved well beyond the trend phase, becoming a reality of today’s business. Moving solutions to the cloud is a valid option for many, yet there are still some gray areas surrounding the cloud discussions.

Each software solution looks at the cloud differently, which creates confusion for the organization looking to deploy. There are many ways to build a cloud, but the key to selecting the right one is finding solutions that favor the customer rather than just the vendor.

Vendors continually push the concept of multi-tenancy, or hosting multiple customers on a single cloud, as a viable option for the customer.

However, there is a hidden reality of multi-tenancy that isn’t regularly confessed by these vendors—and it is critical for organizations when making decisions.

4 Things to Know when Moving Quality Management to the Cloud

[fa icon="calendar'] Wed, Mar 12, 2014 / by Tim Lozier

I recently had a discussion with a colleague about technology and how things have evolved over the past few years, and the topic of the "Cloud" came up.  One of the terms he put forth was that of "cloudwash" - an interesting way of saying that everyone states they have a cloud solution, but no one really know what that means.  There are all sorts of cloud messages flooding the market - public, private, SaaS, PaaS and more.  Many companies have moved to some cloud platform, and Quality Management Software systems are also moving in this direction, but what does it all mean?

3 Things you Need to Know about Validating QMS in the Cloud

[fa icon="calendar'] Thu, Mar 29, 2012 / by Tim Lozier

As technology evolves, more companies are looking for easier ways to manage their IT infrastructure and, in turn, their Quality Management System (QMS).  First came the client-server (thick client); then came the Web client(thin client); and now Software as a Service (SaaS) (supermodel thin client).  With the first two, the key component was the hardware.  It was always known that if you wanted software, you had to put it on a box, and someone had to maintain that box.  In this new technological era, IT is tired of maintaining your hardware;  they are looking for ways to deploy the QMS in the "cloud" - the hosted realm where server farms enable virtual operating environments to "float" and draw what bandwidth is needed to make the software work.

With all the industry abuzz about Software as a Service (SaaS), many players are entering the market, throwing their hat in the SaaS ring. Traditionally, we know that SaaS resides in a multi-tenant capacity. The reasons behind this have been twofold:

SaaS and Quality / EHS Management: It's an On Demand World

[fa icon="calendar'] Fri, Jun 04, 2010 / by Tim Lozier

In the evolution of Quality, Compliance and EHS systems, we've seen several incarnations of software platforms over the years.  In the "good old days"  it was client-server models.  Before that, it was word of mouth, spreadsheets, and "folklore".  Then came along the Web (thank you Mr. Gore).  With the advent of the Web, more and more systems became accessible on a different level.  Thin clients pushed data out to the far reaches of the world, or at least as far as your Ethernet cable would let you go.
